The most densely populated city in the world is also the most shoppable. Manila is a direct flight away from Guam and as such, a place that’s becoming not only a frequent stopover, but a destination for food, medical, and shopping. Manila has its share of inequity, crime, and pollution, but I’ll focus on its entertainment value of its popular Makati City.
I just upgraded to the iPhone 6 Plus. Even though I have been accused of such, I’m not a technology junkie. I don’t camp out overnight like a pimply pubescent with nothing better to do every time Apple releases a new phone. I toted my iPhone 4s for years, opting out of the upgrade frenzy to the iPhone 5. It just wasn’t different enough. However, the iPhone 6 is a game changer for me. Admittedly, some of the features I’ll describe were available in the iPhone 5s and are a result of iOS8.
Park Hyatt Chicago is the way to experience the Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s famous shopping district. Our room had a perfect view of the Chicago Water Tower, surrounding architecture, and a swath of Lake Michigan. Located on Michigan Avenue, we were within walking distance of most of the itinerary stops for One Perfect Day in Chicago. To…
The Fuji Rock Festival in Japan was one of the most fun weekends of my entire life. Read my review of Day 1 and Day 2 in case you missed the action. As a photographer and journalist, I had a backstage pass to see some of my favorite musicians perform, including one of my new favorites, Lorde….

Located just 1.6 km/1 mi. off the southern tip of Guam, Cocos Island is an uninhabited getaway for residents and visitors alike.
As our bus rolled in to the sprawling white ski resort, I imagined pulling up to the bar and having a cocktail or two with any of my favorite bands who I heard were staying at this very hotel — Bombay Bicycle Club, SBTRKT, Travis, Outkast, Lorde, Flaming Lips, Basement Jaxx, St. Vincent, to name a few.
You’ve never seen a Holiday Inn like this. That’s because it’s the first of its kind in the world — a 5-star version of the faithful franchise.
Living on the beautiful tropical island of Guam means staycations are a welcome alternative to jetting off-island to relax. Eschewing the hubbub of Guam’s tourism center, Tumon, we ventured north to STARTS Golf Resort. We were soon seduced by the charm of the place.
We awoke to a stunning view of rolling green hills and the sounds of sheep and goats greeting us as we peered out the large bay window. Incredible. We took our coffee, tea, toast, and local jam in the majestic dining room along with a couple from Australia. Our hosts introduced themselves, the farm, and even let us feed the animals. Can you believe this house was transplanted from Auckland?
